Have you ever wondered how contact lenses work? They're an exciting technology for anyone who needs to wear glasses, as they allow you to have good eyesight without having to wear frames on your face or undergo laser eye surgery (which is expensive and can be risky). They have been around for many decades now, but have made several advances in that time.

Originally, contact lenses were hard and non-pliable. This made them difficult to get into and out of your eyes and somewhat uncomfortable to wear. Over the years, this has changed, and now lenses are soft and comfortable, and you usually don't even know they're on your eye

. You can get versions that you can wear all the time for a week or more before having to change them (you can even sleep in some models), or you can choose lenses you wear for two weeks (except at night) before throwing them away, or even lenses that are disposed of daily. There are colored contact lenses, too, for those who want a unique look or want to change their eye color. The possibilities are virtually endless.

Of course, the main purpose of contact lenses is to correct vision, just as glasses do. In fact, contact lenses could easily be referred to as glasses that you wear ON your eyes instead of over them. They work in much the same way that glasses do, by refracting light so that it enters your eye at an appropriate angle to correct your vision defects. In the past, contact lenses were made only for nearsighted people. Later advances saw the introduction of lenses for farsighted people, for people with astigmatism, and for those who need bifocals. Now, nearly anyone who needs to have their vision corrected can find a contact lens that is right for them. That is basically how contact lenses work.

Of course, since they go on your eye, they need to be kept moist so as not to dry out your eye. This is why you soak them in contact lens solution at night...to keep them wet and pliable, otherwise they would dry out and become very brittle and you couldn't wear them anymore. The lenses themselves are made of about 60 percent water, and certain new models are made to stay moist in your eye for longer periods of time. Naturally, being on your eye, which is a wet surface, will also help keep the contact lenses moist to some degree.

However, you'll eventually experience some dryness while the lenses are in your eyes. That is just how contact lenses work. If you're in a cold or arid room, for example, your lenses may dry out. Keeping your eyes open without blinking can also dry them out. That's why any person with contact lenses should always carry some moistening drops, just for those moments when you really need some extra moisture in your eyes.
