Types of LASIK Eye Surgery

Basically there are two different types of LASIK surgery, Standard LASIK and Custom LASIk. the primary difference lies in the use of the laser and the customization of the laser using complex computer controlled mapping of the eye.

Standard LASIK surgery

Before any procedure is scheduled the eye surgeon will do a detailed analysis of the health of the eyes and possible underlying conditions. The overall health of the candidate is also assessed.

Three types of eye drops are then administered. Their roles are to anesthetize the eye, fight possible infection and reduce post-operative inflammation.

The next stage sees the patient in a recliner with the laser overhead. The eyelids are then stabilized so that there is no blinking. The eye surgeon then makes an incision in the outer layer of the cornea thereby making a flap. This flap is then held back.

At this stage the laser comes into play and it reshapes the cornea to its optimum shape. This process only takes a few seconds. The flap is then re-positioned and the eye covered.

Custom LASIK Surgery

In standard LASIK surgery the eye surgeon determines the usage of the laser. In custom LASIK a far more detailed and complex mapping of the eye takes place. All the relevant information is gathered and processed by a specialized computer system.

Based on the information gathered from the mapping the laser then automatically finds the optimum settings. This in effect means that each individual eye gets a truly customized and unique treatment. Unique to that eye alone.

Risks and complications

As is the case with any surgery there are attendant risks. However the sucess rate for LASIK eye surgery is very high. One of the more usual issues is dry eye after Lasik surgery.
